Agricultural terraces in the Mediterranean: medieval intensification revealed by OSL profiling and dating

چکیده
Abstract The history of agricultural terraces remains poorly understood due to problems in dating their construction and use. This has hampered broader research on significance, limiting knowledge past practices the long-term investment choices rural communities. authors apply OSL profiling sediments associated with across Mediterranean region date Results from five widely dispersed case studies reveal that although many were used first millennium AD, most intensive episodes terrace-building occurred during later Middle Ages ( c . AD 1100–1600). innovative approach provides large-scale evidence for both longevity medieval intensification terraces.

Optically-stimulated luminescence profiling and dating of historic agricultural terraces in Catalonia (Spain)
Dating agricultural terraces is a notoriously difficult problem for archaeologists. The frequent occurrence of residual material in terrace soils and the potential for post-depositional disturbance mean that conventional artefactual and lab-based dating methods often provide unreliable dates. In this paper we present a new technique using luminescence field profiling coupled with OSL dating to ...

Deeds, or charters, dealing with property rights, provide a continuous documentation which can be used by historians to study the evolution of social, economic and political changes. This study is concerned with charters (written in Latin) dating from the tenth through early fourteenth centuries in England. Of these, at least one million were left undated, largely due to administrative changes ...

متن کاملExposure Age Dating of Strath Terraces in the Danube Bend
Detailed description of the geology, topography and terraces of the Danube Bend was presented in Chapter 3. “Traditional” terrace ages concerning this area were derived from “relevant” data of the neighbouring valley sections, as lack of datable material prevented the Danube Bend terraces from setting up a more reliable chronological frame. Application of a new dating method was necessary to qu...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas mitigation by agricultural intensification.
As efforts to mitigate climate change increase, there is a need to identify cost-effective ways to avoid emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Agriculture is rightly recognized as a source of considerable emissions, with concomitant opportunities for mitigation. Although future agricultural productivity is critical, as it will shape emissions from conversion of native landscapes to food and bio...
